“Our law firm, Burg Simpson, is pleased to partner with the Denver Police Officers Foundation to sponsor the Burg Simpson Law Firm Denver Police Officer Foundation Scholarship competition. We will award a $1,500 scholarship to a senior high school student who is the child of an active Denver Police Officer. We at Burg Simpson and the board members of the Denver Police Officers Foundation believe it is important to encourage our police officers’ children to pursue a college education. Scholarship Details

Prizes

One college scholarship of $1,500 will be awarded to the winner of the competition and can be used in any way by the winner to help cover the cost of college tuition, fees, books, meal plans, or housing.

Eligibility

This competition is open to high school students who:

  • Are currently in 12th grade; and
  • Have a parent that is an active member of the Denver Police Department

Children of current Board Members of the Denver Police Officers Foundation are not eligible.

Essay Details

Essay Topic

Entrants of the Burg Simpson Law Firm College Scholarship Competition must write an original essay of 1,500 words or less that answers the following topic.

 

What would you like people to know about what it is like to have a parent who is a police officer?

Essay Requirements

  • Essays must be original work. All sources used must be properly cited and included in the Bibliography/Works Cited.
  • Essays cannot be more than 1,500 words. Citations and Bibliography are not included in the word count.
  • Entrees must include a properly formatted Bibliography/Works Cited and use in-text citations for references.

Selection Process

Selection Details

  • All essays submitted become the property of Burg Simpson Law Firm.
  • The winner will be selected by an independent judging committee, made up of three retired Denver police officers selected by the Denver Police Officers Foundation Board of Directors.
  • The decisions of the independent judging committee are final.
  • By entering the scholarship competition, winners agree to allow Burg Simpson and the Denver Police Officers Foundation the right to publish the entrant’s name, photograph, all personal and other information (including general locations) for the purpose of publicizing Burg Simpson, the Denver Police Officers Foundation, and the competition (including in broadcast media, online and printed publications).
